My arch-rival Robert and I met on the field of honor a bit back. Seeing as how I like reading battle reports, I decided to write one up myself. Some errors were made (like forgetting to say what size battle we would be fighting) but all in all, it was a fun romp.
THE FORCES:
Swamp Goblins:SpearmenDevout:
Heavy Spearmen
Mantis Guard
Blowpipers
(All large warbands, didn't write down numbers.)Cursed, 4
Cursed, 4
Risen, Elf Archers (a passel)
Necromancer (with Quicken Undead)
Warped Lord (with Summon Greater Twillight Demon, and Possession)
One Abyss Crawler (aptly named Pinky)THE SETUP:
See map below.Pretty basic terrain setup. Swamp Goblins deploy on the north (or top of the map) and the Devout on the south. Large hill on the west, with a small copse of trees to the east. There were a couple rises in the Devout deployment zone, but those were quickly avoided.
The Swamp Goblins started both groups of Spearmen between the hill and the trees. The Mantis Guard started to the east of the trees.
The Devout started with the Risen on the east, with both groups of Risen after that, and the Warped Lord on the west. The Necromancer took up the rear behind the Risen.
Lastly, the Blowmen took their position on the copse of trees, out of line of sight.
THE BATTLE:
The Spearmen start moving into the pass between the hill and the trees. The Heavy Spearmen behind the regulars. The Mantis Guard went east, around the far side of the trees, to flank. And the Blowpipers took better positions on the copse of trees. The Necromancer quickened the Risen, and had them move forward to take out the Blowpipers. One group of Risen moved to head off the spearmen (Who had them outnumbered three-to-one. Valiant men, those Cursed.) The second group of Risen stayed behind, to see where they would be needed most. The Warped Lord summoned a Greater Twillight Demon, while the Crawler dug down and started moving towards the Mantis Guards.
Blowpipers get taken out more or less summarily by the Quickened Risen Archers. Twillight Demon gets sent in after the Cursed, who have started mixing it up with the Spearmen. The Abyss Crawler surfaces and gets his clock cleaned by shots and the Mantis, but not without doing some damage. And the other group of Cursed still stays in reserve.
The crush of the Risen hordes spills over. The Demon provides the breath of fresh air the Cursed needed, and while the Cursed and the Demon are wiped out almost to the man, the damage was done. The Spearmen were suffering heavily. The Risen had make quick work of the remaining Mantis and Blowpipers, and were now moving towards the pass. And the Cursed in reserve started moving forward as the Warped Lord started summoning another Twillight Demon. The day was won to the forces of evil yet again.
AFTERMATH:
To his credit, Robert was short on points, and had he brought flyers, I woulda been hard pressed to take them out. Would have had to dedicate the Risen to that task, leaving his 'Pipers to do some damage. My spellcasters once again proved their versatility and worth however, as I didn't even need Possession. Pinky the Abyss Crawler didn't do much (to the point that I forgot to include him in the first draft of this report. But I have faith in him for next time.
