FALSE PROPHETS
Good proxy suggestions for Chronopia.
This section will be to suggest proxies for future (and present) Chronopia
miniatures. Please mail me
all you suggestions and ideas (which I will accredit to you.)
A large part of the problem, though it's not actually negative, is that
the Chronopia figures have a very unique look to them. It's a pain finding
a figure that looks like the Firstborn or the Elves. However, we can still
try.
I fully support Target and their endeavors, and realize that they make the
majority of their money off the miniatures. However, they don't have all
models available immediately, and in some cases, we players might not like
the current official model, or might want a little variety.
All miniature company URLs listed at the bottom of the page.
A number of the pictures were taken from 1999's
Reaper Miniatures Painting Contest.
Please note that all Ral Partha numbers are from the old numbering
scheme before they were bought by FASA. Most if not all the figures will
remain in production, but the numbers will change to the new scheme. Just
fair warning.
GENERAL:
- Banners: Want a banner for the back of one of your models? Here's
one easy method.
DEVOUT:
- Risen: OK, this should be a section unto itself. Target's Risen, while
very nice looking, are not economically viable considering how
many Risen most players field. So it comes down to which
companies' proxies you prefer.
- Swordsmen: Reaper, Skeletons with Scimitars (5034).
Catalog
Picture.
- Archers: Reaper, Skeletons with Bows (5002).
Catalog
Picture. "I got some absolutely fab skellie archers from
Harlequin." [Manos] Old Heartbreaker Fantasy Army skeletons
with bows. [Sniper]
- Skeletal Knight: RAFM, mounted skeleton with sword and shield.
Sniper also suggests the Famine horsemen, from Reaper.
Catalog Picture. "Mounted GW Wraith Champion and Mounted GW
Wraith (the first is better but more expensive, like 12 bucks, yes
he is GW priced to sale.)" [Horned God]
- Greater Undead: The niftiest is Reaper's Dire Dead Eradicator (#2270)
Catalog Picture.
Contest Picture.
I also have Ral Partha's Skeletal Giant (11-496) and I will
probably also grab Ral Partha's Skeletal Giant (02-940) when I can
find it.
- Necromancer: Reaper, Kothmar, Evil Priest (#2153).
Catalog Picture.
Contest Picture.
- Dusk Realm Warriors: "I picked up some GW Beastmen. only one of the 4
designs has a sword, but they all have shields and some nifty
horns for that Ram attack. they look prety good painted up in the
same scheme as your DR Demon." [Stroh] "Converted Dark
Eyes... remove one sword and add a shield." [Sniper] Personally, I
use a bunch of OOP GW Chaos Warriors I nabbed at an auction, the
Devout symbol looks so nice on their shields...
- Dusk Realm Demon: ?
- Greater Demon of the Twillight: Ral Partha's Mizor, Demon Lord
(with rebasing, of course.) #01-186.
Catalog Picture. Until recently, I also used Reaper's
Zombie Werewolf, #2132.
Catalog Picture.
Sniper also suggests the Zenithian Slaughtermaster, from Target's
Warzone line. "Used Legend of the
Five Rings Oni no Kamu (the ones with no head but just a mouth and
thus had two claws, since it's hard to find demons with no
weapons.)" [Horned God]
Picture from
Plains of Amaterasu
- Demon of the Twillight: "Used smaller Oni of the a different type and
they too had just claws as per the chronopia stats. They look
great and work fine but my friend has a demon (either Ral Partha
or RAFM actually) which made a demon kneeling and when painted an
evil bloody red like my friend painted him this model (if Target
put out one) would probably be better than anything they could do
or at least equal it as it really IS the Demon of the Twillight."
[Horned God] Sniper again recommends the Zenithian Soulslayer
from Warzone.
- Demon Knight: I use one of Harlequin's miniatures, a mounted Drakul
Knight. Necromancer, from the forum, prefers a GW Archaon.
- Forgotten: "I use 4 Devout swordsmen as The Forgotten for LoTR
because their description fits them perfectly. I'm starting to
think they used them for the swordsmen instead because the
original swordsmen looked like the greatswordsmen... bad. :)
[Bill Forst.]
- Blood Hunters: "Current or OOP GW Dark Elf Cold One riders. They have
lances, but they could pass as javelins. The OOP riders held
crossbows." [Bill
Forst.]
ELVES:
- Skyrider (Flying Dragonbane): I may try a conversion using Reaper's
new Wyvern, Blacksting.
Catalog picture.
Also check out Ral Partha's War Dragon with Knight, #01-083.
Catalog Picture.
- Archers: Ral Partha, High Elf Regulars, Firing Bow (02-009).
Catalog Picture.
Obsidian Elves:
Crystal Elves:
- Blue/Silver Lotus Eater: Ral Partha, Male and Female Fighters/Magic
Users, #02-606.
Catalog Picture.
- Dream Warriors: The Phoenix Void Guard [10-510] from AEG's Clan
War.
- Ice Warriors: "I don't play elves because I don't like their bows, but
if I did, plastic Dark Elf warriors from GW work well for the ice
warriors from the Summon Ice Warriors spell.
[Bill Forst.] I
personally followed this advice, and for a leader, I'm using a
Elven Swordsmen (since I don't use swordsmen, and they're getting
changed anyways.)
House of Helios:
- Red Lotus Eater: From Ral Partha's Birthright line, Quirad Al-Dinn
(11-754).
Catalog Picture. I gave him a sword from one of Reaper's
Weapons packs in his outstretched hand.
- Warrior of the Golden Mask: I've been using some Leviathan
spearmen. Pictures in a bit.
- Daughter of the Phoenix: From the Forum: "Some I've seen are FB Black
Sister Leader painted in all orange and gold, and a Blade Maiden
Leader, again painted in orange and gold-tone brown." [BlueRat]
"I'm Thinking about doing something like this, although I want to
add some wings to mine. I'm thinking of using those on that there
Eldar model from GW (I forget what it's called). Might as well put
it some use right? :)" [NetSapiens] I myself intend to take the
wings off the new Repulsar Knight figure, give him the BS's
backpack, and she'll get the wings, get painted up as a DotP. [me]
"Actually, Reaper Miniatures
makes an EXCELLENT proxy for the DOTP. It's a succubus fig. She's
got a sword and wings. With a slight modification, you can add a
shield to her other arm." [Kelis aka Shep]
- Fire Demons: "Ral Partha Elementals (4 different types they are great
for this purpose as they look like firy demons.)" [Horned God]
"OOP GW Khorne Bloodletters (extremely thin, have thin blades,
look awesome painted in fiery colors). Since Fire Demons are
delicate (A15), they could work well."
[Bill Forst.]
House of Jade:
- Jade Lotus Eater: Again, might get Ral Partha's Goddess of Evil,
#01-607, once I check out how tall it is.
Catalog Picture.
FIRSTBORN:
- Repulsar Knight: Since I converted all my Macemen into Swordsmen,
I'm taking the Greatmaceman (one of my favorite Chronopia
figs) and am jazzing it up a little to be my Repulsar
Knight (that Mace *is* big enough to be a Polearm.) However,
Reaper just came out with a new figure: #2311, the Black
Legionnaire. It's a treat.
Catalog Picture.
BLACKBLOODS:
- Troll: Will take some conversion, but Ral Partha's JuGurtha - Four
Armed Titan, #01-176.
Catalog Picture.
Same goes for Borogon the four armed Titan, #01-166.
Catalog Picture.
- Orc Swordsmen: Reaper, Orc Swordsmen (5011). Pretty Eastern, if not
middle eastern.
Catalog
Picture.
- Orc Archers: Reaper, Orc Archers (5012). See above: not exact, but
good enough.
Catalog
Picture.
- Myrmidon: MicroMachines had a Bantha for their Star Wars line that's
the perfect size. Slap on some Goblins, and you're ready to
roll.
- various: Harlequin has a line of Saracens. Once again, their webpage
lacks many pictures, but with some minor work and a clever paint
job, these humans would fit right in with a Blackblood army.
DWARVES:
- Vulture Totem: Ral Partha, Vulture Dragon (10-360.) Pictures courtesy
of Valdric. Large, but nice.
Right view and
left view.
Valdric also suggests the Ral Partha Hook Horror. "A bit
small, but the totem is pretty weak anyways. Plus, it is good for
hiding."
- Horned One Totem - "I use a Devout Damned cuz he's got horns, is Size
2, and has a 'Ram Skull Flail.' I know it's supposed to be a
mace, but eh." [Bill
Forst.] "Grenadier had two appropriate figures in a boxed
set 3006 Minotaurs of the Horned God."
[bioarch@ntrnet.net]
(These are relatively appropriate, I will scan them in once I get
them mostly painted.) Chris Keil [cjkeil@primenet.com] and
Valdric also suggests the GW Vermin Lord, which is relatively
appropriate and a fine figure to boot. "GW Minotaur Lord.
Also pricey, but it is smaller." [Valdric]
- Wolf Totem: "Reaper's Cerberus. It has three head and these annoying
snakes on it, but it is also nice and sized well." [Valdric]
- Blood Bone Totem: "I use a hard rubber model of a polar bear that I
found at a Zaney Brainey. Many stores have natural looking
representations of bears that can be used." [Valdric]
- various: I've heard tell the old, old Warhammer Chaos Dwarves bear
some resemblence to our beastly friends. If I can get my hands on
them, I'll let you know.
- various: From Bill Forst.
"I used to play Chaos Dwarves (until I learned early that
they were becoming extinct) and I can agree that they could work
for some units. The ones in particular:
- Dark-Axe Warriors - OOP Chaos Dwarf warriors had huge axes,
and big armor.
- Dark-Tusk Hero - OOP Chaos Dwarf heroes had big axes, ornate
hats... and Tusks!
- Blood-Bone Axemen - same as dark-axe warriors.
"The extremely old Chaos Dwarves make good proxies as well as the
just recently discontinued ones. The 3rd? edition crossbowmen
make perfect jackal crossbowmen, too bad I sold them just before
getting into Chronopia. There was also a Chaos Dwarf Hero boxed
set that had about 6 special characters in it. I still have it I
do believe, and they could be used as individuals."
- War Totem of Horned Ones - "Convert an old Chaos Dwarf Great Taurus
and add some crossbowmen, or use the old Lammasu (same body, less
generic head)."
[Bill Forst.] I still
recommend the MicroMachines Bantha from their Star Wars line.
Right size, more or less, and furry!
STYGIAN:
- Ophidian: Everyone does Wyverns. Like Reaper's Blacksting.
Catalog picture.
- While I realize that the Tree Devil doesn't carry weapons, the
Harlequin Khameleon Hero is too cool and appropriate.
Catalog picture.
- various: Harlequin does an excellent line of lizardmen in Egyptian
headresses and trappings. Their webpage is woefully lacking in
pictures, but it's worth a look at the local store.
SONS OF KRONOS:
- various: Reaper has a line of Highlanders that works wonders. Many of
the examples presented here are from that line.
- various: Ral Partha has a line of Barbarians called Reavers, done in
their new (matching Chronopia and Warhammer) 28mm scale.
- various, Standards and Hornsmen: Instead of using their hornsmen, you
could opt out for Reaper's Bagpiper, #2271. Just give him a
weapon, and you're good to go.
Catalog Picture.
- Tribal Warriors: Reaper, #2257 Highlander with Spear. Give him a sword
at his belt, and he's good to go.
Catalog picture.
- Hearthguard: Hokay, a bunch from Reaper's Highlander line:
- Hearthguard Leader: Again, from Reaper, the Robert O'Mannon figure,
#2243.
Catalog Picture.
Or, for a little more character, try the Reaper "Mason Rowan"
figure, #2303.
Catalog Picture.
Contest Picture.
- Wyrd: Why not a female Wyrd? Try Reaper's Shannon, Barbarian Queen
(#2183).
Catalog Picture.
Contest Picture.
- Hunter: Take the Reaper Highlander with Spear (#2257) if you aren't
using it as a Tribal Warrior above.
Catalog Picture.
- War Hounds: I'm probably going to use Ral Partha's Wolf Pack
(02-508) as it gives me the most dogs for the buck.
Catalog Picture.
SWAMP GOBLINS:
- Sentinel: Warhammer has a 'Forest Goblin Spider Rider' which is the
conventional proxy for it these days.
- Swamp Fiend: "There is a big spider with it's front legs extended
upward as if to climb a wall and using goblin spearman and a
blowpiper and put a base with some flock on it is the best
solution. I don't know the company who makes the spider but it
does exist and I have seen it painted like the SF and it is
great." [High Goblin]
- various: I am quite seriously considering running a Swamp Goblin army
using the chimps from Raven's Forge.
- various: "As for Swamp Goblins like the novice shaman, I gave up
looking for anything goblin like with a tribal look, instead I'll
just wait. But like I've said before there is an old RAFM or
someother company which put out a Giant Spider and if you put 2
spearman and blowpiper on it it looks great and then mount it on
a base." [Horned God]
GOOD COMPANIES TO WATCH FOR PROXIES:
- Reaper Miniatures: Their
Dark Heaven line can't be beat, for quality or price.
- Ral Partha: Most of the
figures are in true 25mm scale (whereas Chronopia uses 28mm
instead.) You will want to overlook this, however, due to their
excellent quality (and you can do a lot with basing.) A bulwark of
the industry.
- Harlequin:
They're a little hard to find sometimes, but have a great look to
them.
- RAFM Miniatures: slightly higher
prices, but good eye for detail. The "Death in the Dark" line
is shaping up to be a winner.
-
Raven's Forge is small, but has some quality work at a low
price. And monkeys!
